Detection

Vehicle detector loops

A vehicle detection loop, also known as inductive-loop traffic detector, is an electromagnetic communication or detection system, which is considered the most reliable traffic detection method available today.

Originally designed for hearing aids, the science behind inductive loops, which control traffic on roads across the globe, has been around for almost 100 years.

Working on the same principle as a metal detector, inductive loop systems use a moving magnet or alternating current to create an electro current, which is picked up by a vehicle detector.

This reaction is triggered by a metal vehicle passing over the inductive loop.

Used most commonly with traffic light systems, vehicle detection loops manage the flow of traffic at road junctions to enable steady, safe journeys for all vehicles.

Vehicle detection loops are also used to control security gates, bollards and barriers, and to open garage or warehouse doors.

Briant Traffic engineers install complete detection solutions throughout Kent, London and the South East.

Detection

The vehicle detector is a low cost electronic module, which energises the inductive loop with an ac signal, causing a magnetic field. When this field is disrupted by a vehicle passing over the loop, the device detects it and relays the signal.

Detection systems such as this can be used in conjunction with axle sensors to collect classification data, such as speed and length of the vehicle.

Choosing the right vehicle detector for the job takes knowledge and experience. As well as ensuring the loop is installed to optimum sensitivity, it's essential that detector works off the
correct frequency.

There's no reason why an expertly installed vehicle detection loop system should not last a lifetime. Getting is wrong can be costly.
