Intelligent Transportation Systems

Intelligent transportation systems

While many may think intelligent transportation systems, such as driver-less monorails and cars are futuristic, the truth is, ITS is already here and successfully managing traffic on our roads.

Average speed cameras, or SPECS, have been in use in the UK since 1999. Thousands of car parks around the country are using tags to take payments and monitor users.

TfL uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition to manage and apply London's congestion charge. The Dartford Crossing, too, uses ANPR to identify vehicles and apply crossing charges.

ITS provides a range of innovative services relating to transport and traffic management, and by keeping them better informed, enables drivers to make safer, smarter use of our highways.

Some of these technologies include calling for emergency services when an accident occurs. Using cameras to enforce traffic laws and condition dependent speed limit signs, is now commonplace. As are smart motorways.

Benefits of ITS

By directly reducing congestion on our highways, ITS speed management has been proven to dramatically reduce accidents and injuries. By controlling traffic in real time, based on up to the minute events and traffic volumes, and keeping drivers moving at safe speeds, greatly reduces driver stress.

ITS provides a wealth of valuable data and information on road traffic, congestion and road traffic accidents. But as well as managing traffic through incidents, it actively prevents situations from developing by communicating with road traffic apps and feeds. Thereby diverting traffic to reduce further congestion.

ITS maintenance

Briant Traffic's multi-disciplined team of technicians and engineers are ahead of the game in ITS; advising, planning and
delivering systems across Kent, London and the South East.

And not just on new build projects either. Using a skilled, knowledgeable team of engineers, older infrastructure is easily
adapted and transformed with modern-day ITS.

The Kent based team are ideally located to respond to ITS maintenance on projects throughout South East England.

Plus, with a workforce which includes civil engineers and traffic management specialists, Briant Traffic is able to manage all aspects of a project, end to end.

Staying up to date with emerging ITS technology

While Briant Traffic strives to employ only the best in the business, it also ensures that its workforce's skills are kept right up to date with the latest developments. A rigorous programme of training and accreditation, including in all aspects of safety, is aligned with constantly advancing technology.

ITS reducing then environmental impact

A major factor with congestion on our highways is carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions. An idling car produces up to twice as much exhaust emissions as an engine in motion.
So much so that you could fill up to 150 balloons with the harmful emissions that just one car produces every minute it's idling.

As ITS evolves, and with each new development helping reduce congestion further, not only does it make our roads safer, it makes them more environmentally friendly.

And Briant Traffic is committed to reducing its impact on the environment, so is always keen to work on projects that help it meet those specific goals.
